What to buy with 3M Durapore Tape?

How to Use 3M Durapore Surgical Tape?

3M Durapore Silk Tape General taping

3M_Micropore_Medical_TapeApply the tape without tension, gently but firmly stroking the surface to maximize adhesion. Tape should extend at least one-half inch beyond the dressing. Tape should not be pulled or stretched when applied. If swelling does occur, loosen and re-fasten or replace tape to relieve the tension.

How to compress 3M Silk Medical Tape?

3M_Micropore_Medical_TapePlace first section of tape without tension onto skin on one side of the dressing, gently pressing downward.
3M_Micropore_Medical_TapeWith one hand, secure tape on one edge of the dressing while slightly stretching next section of tape over the dressing.
3M_Micropore_Medical_TapeSecure tape on opposite edge of the dressing.
3M_Micropore_Medical_TapePress remaining tape onto skin without tension. Compression should come from the multiple layers of dressing material, not from excessive tension in the tape. Skin distention under tape may result in blistering and should be relieved as soon as possible.

How to Remove Durapore Hypoallergenic Tape?

  • Proper tape removal is critical in reducing the occurrence of skin trauma.
  • Loosen edges of tape. If necessary, press a small piece of tape onto a corner to start an edge of the tape.
  • Stabilize the skin with one finger. Remove tape “low and slow” in direction of hair growth, keeping it close to skin surface and pulled back over itself.
  • Removing tape at an angle will pull at the epidermis increasing risk of mechanical trauma.
  • As tape is removed, continue supporting newly exposed skin.

Properties of 3M Surgical Tape Adhesive

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Free of natural rubber latex
  • Pressure sensitive (adhere with only finger or hand pressure)
  • Designed to be as gentle as possible and yet deliver the desired performance

3m Durapore Tape 1538 Application recommendations

  • Always apply to clean dry surface
  • To maximize adhesion, gently press or rub from centre out to edges of tape
  • To promote skin health, do not stretch or apply with tension over areas where tape will be adhering directly to skin

What to Consider While Choosing A Tape For Tube Or Dressing Secural?

I. Degree of importance of tube or dressing:
  • The more critical the tubing/dressing, the higher the adhesion required.
  • Strength of adhesion and backing may be more important than gentleness.
  • Gentle tapes with higher adhesion may be used without increasing the risk of skin trauma if properly applied and removed.
  • Some tapes are less gentle but are used for high initial adhesion, high long-term adhesion and high strength of backing.

II. Surface characteristics:

Skin
  • Dry
  • Damp
  • Diaphoretic
  • Wet: secretions, leaking tubes
  • Weeping
  • Macerated
  • Oily
  • Hairy
  • Edematous
  • Intact vs. impaired skin integrity
  • Elastic vs. non-elastic
  • Fragile skin (elderly, very young)
  • “At-risk” (e.g., patient on systemic corticosteroids, chemotherapy; malnourished)
  • Flexing
  • Heavy tubings require higher adhesion.
  • Bulky dressings require high conformability and may require greater adhesion.
  • Individual results may vary.
Dressing
  • Material
  • Weight
  • Conformability
Device
  • Contour
  • Weight
  • Material: metal, plastic, other
Tubing
  • Diameter: small, large
  • Texture: smooth, ribbed, other
  • Material: PVC, silicone, other
  • Weight
  • Length
  • Potential for drag or pull
  • Other support (e.g., sutures, tunneling)

III. Activity level of patient:
  • The more active the patient, the higher the adhesion required.

IV.Potential for skin surface distention or movement:
  • The risk of skin damage may be reduced by using tapes that stretch with skin distention or movement.

V. Anticipated wear time:
  • Tape adhesion generally builds over time. Breathable tapes are used for longer term wear.

VI. History and current medical conditions:
  • History and current medical conditions should be studied e.g., allergies/ sensitivities to medical adhesives, medications, medical conditions

Questions & Answers

question
Is there anything more to know than “sticky side down”?
Bob - 9/17/2015 4:21:43 AM
answer
Yes, after choosing the appropriate tape, place the tape without tension onto the skin. In general, do not encircle a limb completely with tape since subsequent swelling or an infiltration may compromise circulation. The adhesives on the surgical tapes are "pressure sensitive".

This means that they are designed to adhere best when gentle, but firm, finger or hand pressure is applied to the tape, rubbing it into place. Skin has hills and valleys. Just laying a piece of tape on the skin only gives you contact with the top of the hills. Gentle, but firm strokes along the tape allows the adhesive to come into contact with more of the skin surface.

This will increase initial adhesion and decrease the risk of "rolling" or losing your tape to friction. Usually, the tackier - or stickier - the tape, the less pressure is needed.

question
Why do some tapes leave so much sticky residue on tubes?
Nancy - 9/17/2015 4:16:21 AM
answer
Plasticizers are used in many medical grade PVC tubes to make them soft, pliable, and more comfortable for patients. Plasticizers tend to "leach" out of the tubing and interact with the tape adhesive, leaving a sticky, gummy residue. 3M Durapore Silk Cloth Hypoallergenic Tape is often used to secure tubing. In general, the longer the Durapore tape is on the tubing, the gummier it will be when the tape is changed.

question
Why do we have an expiration date for tapes? What happens when a tape “expires”?
Lisa - 9/17/2015 4:08:20 AM
answer
Although an expiration date is not required for surgical tapes in the U.S., an expiration date is required by a number of other countries. You might think of it as a "best quality if used by…". In general, we do not expect changes in performance shortly after the expiration date, but 3M ensures performance within that time frame. The recommended shelf life for 3M Durapore tape is 5 years under normal storage conditions.
Customer Service - 9/5/2017 2:27:12 PM
question
Is Durapore tape sterile? Can it be sterilized?
Sue - 9/17/2015 4:07:58 AM
answer
3M Durapore Silk Cloth Hypoallergenic Tape is sold clean but not sterile. It may be sterilized by ethylene oxide or gamma but not by steam (autoclave).
