Medtronic Covidien Kerlix AMD Antimicrobial Super Sponges are impregnated with PHMB (Polyhexamethylene Biguanide), a powerful yet safe antiseptic that has a broad range effectiveness against gram positive and gram negative microorganisms including some multi-drug resistant strains such as MRSA. In addition to its antimicrobial capabilities, the Kerlix AMD Sponges are superior primary and secondary dressing designed to absorb and transfer exudate away from the wound.

  • How PHMB Works?
AMD Antimicrobial dressings contain PHMB (polyhexamethylene biguanide), a bacteria-killing polymer. PHMB attacks bacteria on and within the dressing fabric, helping keep infection out of the wound and limiting cross-contamination. Here is how PHMB works:
    - PHMB binds to phospholipid (outer) membrane of bacteria
    - Disrupts membrane, causing cytoplasm to leak out
    - Protective layer of cell disintegrates
    - Cell collapses and dies
