One of the most common forms of injuries or wounds, burn wounds are of different types and can range from non-fatal to life-threatening in nature. The word burn refers to either the cause of the wound or the aftereffects of the wound. Burn might damage the skin causing the skin cells to die, and sometimes might even reach the inside by damaging tissues and bones. Burn care or treatment requires the use of specialized medical products that help in covering the wound and aiding in the healing process. Hydrocolloid and hydrogel dressings are one of the most commonly used dressings for burn wounds.

Types of Burn Wounds

  • First-degree Burns - Redness of the skin and no appearance of blisters.
  • Second-degree Burns - The skin turns thick and blisters form all over, showing damage of underlying skin.
  • Third-degree Burns - Leathery and waxy skin with numbness of the affected region. Nerves have been damaged.
  • Fourth-degree Burns - The wound has exceeded to the flesh causing charring of the inner tissues. This usually is a fatal burn wound.

Causes of Burn Wounds

  • Scalding from hot liquids
  • Electric burns
  • Burns from fire or high heat
  • Chemical burns
  • High and extensive exposure to the sun

Five Things to Care About While Managing Burn Wounds

  • If the burn is minor then run cool (not cold) water over the burn for 5-10 minutes. This will help soothe the burning sensation.
  • If it is a major burn then do not use water over the burn as it might damage the tissue even further.
  • If it is a chemical burn then remove the contaminated clothing from the body.
  • Do not pull any cloth stuck over the burn wound as it could damage the skin.
  • Cover the wound with a damp cloth in the case of a minor burn and with a dry cloth or dressing in the case of a major burn.

Treatment for Burn Wounds

Depending on the degree of burns, there are many treatment method s that are used to treat the burn.

  • For first degree burns, one can use skin care topical ointments such as cooling cream, antimicrobial creams, or moisturizer to sooth the burning sensation. Since the burn doesn’t damage the lower layer of the skin, one doesn’t require a dressing to treat this burn.
  • Second degree burns, also known as partial-thickness burns, are categorized by formation of blisters that contain fluid. One can choose to keep the blisters intact or debride them to make sure they do not serve as a source of bacterial growth. Second degree burn wounds should be kept moist at all times and so using hydrogel dressings or hydrocolloid dressings provide a great moist wound healing environment and offer great protection.
  • For superficial second degree wounds, you can use alginate dressings or foam dressings to absorb the exudate and keep the wound bed moist. They also allow for fewer dressing changes in the day.
  • You can also opt for non-adherent dressings to keep dressing changes atraumatic.
