What is Absorbent Wound Dressing?

Absorbent wound dressings are used for absorbing wound exudate while minimizing adherence to the wound surface. They include a semi or a non-adherent layer, combined with multiple layers of highly absorptive fibers that effectively manage exudate. Some absorbent dressings for wounds form a gel when they come in contact with wound exudate.

When are Absorbent Wound Dressings used?

Absorbent dressings can be used as a primary or secondary dressing to treat the following:

  • Surgical incisions

  • Abrasions

  • Lacerations

  • Exuding wound

  • Burns

  • Skin grafts

  • Donor sites

Types of Exudate Absorbing Dressings

Based on the amount of wound exudate, low or high absorbency levels may be required. Absorbent wound dressings can be broadly classified into two types:

Low Absorbent Dressings

  • Comprised of a variety of materials like knitted viscose and cotton or acrylic fibers.
  • Some are coated with low adherent materials like perforated films or aluminum.
  • Plastic film prevents the dressing from adhering to the wound surface.
  • It is perforated to allow the wound exudate to pass from the wound into the absorbent pad. Ideal for dry to medium exudating wounds.
  • Can be used to protect surgical incisions or recently healed wounds.
  • Not recommended for moderately to highly exudating wounds.

High/Super Absorbent Dressings

  • Inner core of super absorbent dressings can absorb moderate to high amounts of exudate.
  • Some absorbent wound dressings have a coating of low adherent materials to minimize the risk of adhesion to the wound bed.
  • Some feature a hydrophilic wound contact layer to allow the passage of exudate into the dressing.
  • Ideal for moderately to heavily exudating wounds.
  • Not recommended for low levels of exudate.
