Medihoney Honeycolloid Non-Adhesive Dressing with Active Leptospermum Honey is an absorbent wound dressing made of Active Leptospermum Honey combined with a hydrocolloid gelling agent. The non-adhesive dressing is surrounded by an adhesive border that does not require a secondary dressing. The hydrocolloid agent is contained within the dressing mass. Both the Adhesive and Non-Adhesive dressings contain Active Leptospermum Honey 80%, by weight. As wound exudate is absorbed, the dressing with a low pH and high osmolarity forms a gel. This helps maintain a moist environment for optimal wound healing, aids in autolytic debridement, and allows for non-traumatic removal.

Why choose Derma Medihoney Dressing?

Application of Derma Sciences Medihoney Wound Dressing

  1. Prior to the application of Non-Adhesive Dressing, cleanse the wound area as necessary.
  2. In the case of increased levels of exudate, protect the peri-wound skin with a skin protectant barrier and add an absorptive cover dressing.
  3. Use an appropriately sized Medihoney Honeycolloid Non-Adhesive Dressing. The dressing can be cut to fit within the wound margins. The dressing may be more conformable to the wound if pre-warmed to room temperature prior to use.
  4. For deep wounds, place the dressing within the wound bed and ensure that the dressing does not overlap the wound margins.
  5. Use an appropriate secondary dressing (such as hydrocolloid, foam, thin-film, island/composite, or conforming gauze bandage) to cover the Honeycolloid Non-Adhesive Dressing and additional absorbent dressing (if one is required).

Four Steps to Change and Removal of Derma Sciences Medihoney Dressing

  1. Dressing changing frequency will depend on the condition of the patient and the level of wound exudate. The Medihoney Dressing can be left in place under compression & off-loading devices.
  2. Reapply when the dressing has reached its absorbent capacity or as directed by wound care professional.
  3. Moisten with sterile saline if the wound bed seems to be dry before removing the dressing. Now gently remove the dressing from the wound bed.
  4. Cleanse the wound bed before application of the new dressing.

Precautions:

  1. Due to the low pH, some patients may notice slight temporary stinging on the wound area. If stinging continues and cannot be managed with an analgesic, remove the dressing, cleanse the area, and discontinue use.
  2. Manage additional moisture by adding an absorbent cover dressing or adjusting the frequency of dressing change.
  3. Due to autolytic debridement, it is very common for non-viable tissue to remove from the wound, resulting in an initial increase in wound size during the healing process. Consult a healthcare Doctor if the wound continues to grow larger after the first few dressing changes.
  4. If the dressing is not easily removed, soak with sterile saline or water until it is removed without difficulty.
  5. Consult a healthcare professional if you see signs of infection, increasing redness, pain, wound drainage, skin irritation, and changes in wound color or odor.
  6. Do not use this dressing with any other wound care products, other than those dressings listed in the package, without first consulting a healthcare professional.

Contraindications:

  • Third-degree burns
  • Patients with known sensitivity to aliginates or honey
